A legend comes home. Good food, live music, and room to gather — the way Bessemer remembers it.
The DownBeat is coming back as the Lemo’s DownBeat Event Center — a restaurant, a live-music room, and an event space under one roof, built on the name Bessemer has known since 1965.
Southern cooking worth dressing up for — lunch, dinner, and plates made to be shared with the table.
No big stage — an intimate room with the band right up close. Oldies, classic soul, blues, and old-school R&B for the grown folks, with the dance floor a step away.
Reunions, receptions, birthdays, and celebrations. One historic room, your people, our kitchen and our music.
The original DownBeat opened its doors in 1965 and kept them open until 2019 — over five decades of music, dancing, and neighborhood history. Juke joints like this one were the beating heart of Black Southern nightlife: where the band was family, the dance floor was church on a Saturday night, and everybody had a table.
Now a new owner is bringing it back — same name, same spirit, new chapter. Lemo’s DownBeat Event Center honors the room that was, and builds the room Bessemer deserves next.
From the original DownBeat — the room, the people, the nights. “Where the grown folks hang out” was its own words then. It still is.
